Tips for selecting vegetable juicers

So you want to improve your health? Vegetable juice may sound scary to some people, but in reality it is often milder in taste than many fruit juices! Fruit and vegetable juicers are your best friend when it comes to taking control of your health. The sooner you start the better! Fresh juice is simply packed full of nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and still living plant enzymes that are impossible to get from any sort of supplement.

Home fruit and vegetable juicers have led a true revolution – raw food, in a form for everyday people. Raw foods such as vegetables contain compounds you can never get from the average western diet, and as such “raw food” diets are a proven method of curing or at least controlling many diseases and medical conditions. Of course in the ideal world you could just eat the ingredients rather than juice them, but there are problems with this: Many people don’t have good enough teeth or gums to chew hard vegetables, some simply lack the physical stamina (say recovering from a disease) or just don’t have the time. And lets face it – munching through several pounds of carrot and celery sticks can be a bit depressing! Vegetable juicers solve all these problems. Effectively they do the chewing for you – literally in the case of machines made by companies like Angel, Samson, and Greenstar. These are all what are known as “masticating juicers” because they slowly crush up the ingredients rather than shred them (like say the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer, you might have seen it in those late nigh infomercials?). Masticating actually is the scientific term for chewing, and these powerful machines use a slowly spinning auger or gear to grind and extract juice. This is a major advantage for juicing different sorts of vegetables: You will encounter very hard ingredients like beetroots and carrots, as well as very dry and stringy ones like kale and herbs such as parsley. A normal cheap juicer from a department store will be unable to cope with either of these extremes. Vegetable juicers should  be of solid construction, and easy to disassemble and clean. Cleaning is a major consideration, and many people don’t look at what they will need to pull apart and wash up every day – the best materials to look for in the juicer parts are stainless steel, but failing this then heavy, solid plastic components are also fairly easy to clean and look after.
You may also want to consider whether the vegetable juicers you have looked at are able to process other ingredients, such as pasta dough, soy beans, or nuts and seeds. Many juicer machines are able to double as food processors, and can make soy milk and even cold pressed seed oils.
