Why masticating juicers are better
Peanut butter may not seem quite relevant on a web site dedicated to fruit juice and vegetable juicers, but stay with me: Did you know that many masticating juicers are able to make delicious spreads out of peanuts, cashews, almonds and virtually any other combination of nuts and seeds? If you are enthusiastic about making your own juice, you probably are aware of how many artificial ingredients go into the simplest commercial foods, and know that home made food is always best for your health. If you already own a masticating juicer (the sort that uses a slowly turning screw or auger to crush ingredients) have a look at your owners manual – you may be surprised to find that you are able to make nut butters already.
If you are looking at buying a masticating juicer, then consider whether the model you want has this capability. Most higher end models come with a special attachment that allows you to grind nuts, or such an attachment may be available on request. Making peanut or cashew butters is great fun especially for kids, who can help you pour the nuts into the juicer chute. Making spreads is much the same as juicing, don’t overload the juicer machine and if it seems jammed then stop it, reverse it if it has the function, and if this doesn’t work then give it a quick clean by hand. Generally nuts are not likely to jam at all, because they already come in “bite size” pieces the machine can handle and break up easily. Commercial nut spreads usually contain added oil (check the jar if you like) but you don’t need this for peanuts. Drier nuts like almonds and hazelnuts definitely need some oil added to become a spreadable paste, the best oil is neutral flavored vegetable oil like sunflower or coconut oil.
Just allow me to re-emphasize again, that you need to make sure you have a masticating juicer (not a centrifugal one) and that the manufacturer states it is OK to use it for nuts. Most are fine, but don’t put yourself in for expensive new juicer parts because you couldn’t be bothered checking! The Angle juicer is a very high end machine that is famous for being able to process virtually any thing you can throw at it. It does come with a hefty price tag, but delivers the goods, being able to cold press flax seeds and linseeds to make what are otherwise very expensive food grade oils to buy. If your budget allows it, the Angel Juicer is a great choice, but alternative masticating juicers can be found for cheaper prices and can still perform many versatile tasks. Nut butters are not the only thing you can make, many models allow you to make soy milk, and some even come with attachments to grind meats and fish.
